About This Site
Best Rock Tumbler is a small publication for hobby rock tumblers. We cover rotary and vibratory tumblers, grit and polish kits, rough stone for filling a barrel, and the hand tools that help you find good rock in the first place. Every guide is written from long hours at a garage workbench, including the batches that went wrong, so you can get shiny stones with fewer ruined loads.

Tumbling Safety
Rock tumbling is a calm hobby, but a few real hazards are worth knowing. Tumblers run for days at a time, so set yours on a stable, level surface away from curtains, paper and anything flammable, use a grounded outlet, and never run a cord through a doorway or under a rug. Check the motor and belt for heat and wear between stages.
Never pour grit slurry down a household sink or toilet. It settles like concrete and can clog plumbing. Let it dry in a bucket or a lined box and throw it out with the trash. Dry grit and rock dust are fine silica particles, so avoid breathing them in: work with wet material when you can and wear a dust mask when you scrape out dried slurry.
Some stones should not go in a tumbler at all, including soft or toxic minerals and anything you cannot identify. Keep grit, polish and small stones away from children and pets, since small tumbled stones are a choking hazard. When using a rock hammer or chisel in the field, wear safety glasses and gloves, as struck rock can throw sharp chips, and follow local rules about where collecting is allowed.
This site shares general hobby information, not professional advice. Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your tumbler and supplies.
